Understanding Electricity and Natural Gas Rate Units

Electricity and natural gas rates use different measurement units depending on the type of energy and utility provider.

  • kWh (kilowatt-hour): A unit used to measure electricity consumption.
  • CCF (hundred cubic feet): A unit used to measure natural gas volume.
  • MCF (thousand cubic feet): A unit used to measure natural gas volume.
  • Therm: A unit used to measure the heat energy contained in natural gas.

When reviewing the rates, compare providers using the same measurement unit. Rates expressed in different units should not be compared directly without conversion.
